Over 100 vulnerable individuals, including orphans, widows, and teenage mothers in Arua and neighboring districts, are set to gain tailoring and garment-cutting skills through a free vocational training program organized by the Mungufeni Foundation.

Now in its third intake this year, the initiative focuses on empowering disadvantaged groups such as school dropouts and young mothers aged 17 and above, with the aim of promoting self-reliance and sustainable livelihoods.

During the program’s launch, Mungufeni Feni, the foundation’s founder and CEO, emphasized that the training serves as a vital tool for both personal empowerment and community development.

“Skills are key to personal growth and long-term progress. Through this program, we seek to create opportunities for orphans, teenage mothers, and widows to become self-sufficient and live with dignity,” Feni stated.

The foundation runs similar sessions annually in Arua, offering hands-on instruction in tailoring and garment-cutting. According to Feni, the ultimate goal is not just to provide income-generating skills, but also to nurture agents of change within local communities.

For many participants, a sewing machine represents more than a working tool — it’s a symbol of freedom, confidence, and a fresh start. The skills acquired empower trainees to either open small tailoring businesses or secure jobs in Uganda’s growing textile industry, helping them achieve financial independence and resilience.

“When you equip someone with a skill, you give them the means to sustain themselves and uplift their communities,” Feni added.
