Tooro Kingdom Sets Coronation date as September 29 for Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma to succeed

The Tooro Kingdom succession process has taken another major step following the formal endorsement of Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma Nyabongo I by the Tooro Kingdom Supreme Council.

The Supreme Council endorsed Kijanangoma on September 15, 2026, supporting the decision of the 21-member Babiito Royal Clan succession committee that selected him as successor to the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.

Following the endorsement, the head of the Babiito Royal Clan, Musuuga Charles Kamurasi, announced that the coronation of Kijanangoma is scheduled for September 29, 2026, at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal. Preparations for the ceremony are expected to begin immediately, involving clans, county chiefs and other kingdom leaders.

Kijanangoma is expected to reign under the name Omukama Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I. The coronation will include traditional rituals through which he will formally be installed on the Tooro throne.

However, the succession remains a matter of disagreement within parts of the royal family. Some members have questioned Kijanangoma's selection and have argued that the late King Oyo's alleged will should be considered. The Babiito Royal Clan maintains that Kijanangoma was selected according to Tooro customs and traditions.

The Supreme Council's endorsement therefore represents an important development in the succession process, while the planned September 29 coronation is expected to mark the formal beginning of Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I's reign.
