Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma has been declared the new King of Tooro, following the burial of the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV on September 12, 2026.
Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I Declared New King of Tooro
The announcement was made by Musuuga Charles Akiiki Kamurasi, head of the Babiito royal clan, during the proceedings surrounding King Oyo’s final send-off in Fort Portal.
The new monarch will reign under the name King Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, marking the beginning of a new era for the Tooro Kingdom.
Kijanangoma is a member of the Tooro royal family and previously worked as a news presenter with the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC). His emergence follows weeks of public attention and discussion surrounding the succession to the late King Oyo.
Earlier reports had linked George Desmond Kamurasi to the succession, but that proposal did not ultimately result in his taking the throne.
The new king now begins his journey as the monarch of Tooro following the death and burial of King Oyo, who died at the age of 34. King Oyo was laid to rest at the Karambi Royal Tombs on September 12.
Traditional ceremonies and rituals associated with the new king's accession are also expected to form part of the transition as the kingdom begins a new chapter.
