The King's remains arrived at Entebbe International Airport on Friday, September 4, 2026, following their journey from the United States through Nairobi.
The arrival marks a significant moment for the Royal Family, the people of Tooro and thousands of Ugandans who have been mourning the death of the monarch.
President Museveni Receives King Oyo’s Remains
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni was at Entebbe International Airport to receive the King's remains and pay his final respects.
The official reception brought together government officials, members of the Tooro Royal Family and other dignitaries who gathered to honour the late monarch.
The Queen Mother, Best Kemigisa Akiiki, and members of the Royal Family were also present during the reception.
The casket was received with an official guard of honour. The Uganda national colours and the colours of the Tooro Kingdom were placed on the casket as part of the ceremony.
President Museveni paid his respects and laid a wreath before the King's remains were prepared for the next stage of the journey.
King Oyo’s Final Journey to Tooro
Following the official reception at Entebbe, the King's remains are being transported by helicopter to Kyegegwa District.
From Kyegegwa, the royal cortege will continue by road toward Fort Portal, allowing people along the route to gather and pay their final respects.
The revised funeral arrangements have changed the route of the King's final journey, giving communities in Kyegegwa, Kyenjojo and Kabarole an opportunity to witness the procession before it reaches Karuziika Palace.
The cortege is expected to move through the towns along the route, with security agencies managing the movement and guiding mourners.
Large crowds are expected to gather along the roads as the people of Tooro say goodbye to their King.
Nine Days of Mourning
The arrival of King Oyo's body begins an important period of mourning and funeral ceremonies in the Tooro Kingdom.
A nine-day mourning period has been arranged, during which members of the Royal Family, cultural leaders, religious leaders, government officials and members of the public will have opportunities to honour the late monarch.
At Karuziika Palace, mourners will be able to pay their respects to the King as prayers and traditional cultural ceremonies take place.

King Oyo was crowned King of Tooro on September 12, 1995, when he was only three years old.
