Uganda’s Electoral Commission Trains MPS

As preparations for the 2026 General Elections intensify, the Electoral Commission (EC) has launched a series of specialized training sessions for Members of Parliament and key government officials. The training focuses on the deployment of Biometric Voter Verification Kits (BVVK), a cornerstone of the Commission’s strategy to ensure a transparent and secure voting process.

Strengthening Election Integrity

The BVVK system is designed to eliminate identity fraud and prevent multiple voting. By using unique biological markers—such as fingerprints and facial recognition—the kits ensure that only registered voters can cast a ballot at their designated polling stations.

Key Objectives of the Training:

  • Technical Familiarization: Ensuring lawmakers understand the hardware and software capabilities of the new devices.

  • Transparency: Providing a "hands-on" look at how the data is handled to build public trust in the digital system.

  • Operational Readiness: Identifying potential challenges in the rollout before the technology is deployed nationwide to over 100,000 polling stations.

A Step Toward Modernization

The Electoral Commission maintains that these kits will significantly speed up the verification process on election day while providing an immutable record of voter turnout. By briefing MPs first, the EC aims to ensure that leaders can accurately inform their constituents about how the technology protects the "one person, one vote" principle.
