Tanzania Cancels Independence Day Celebrations Amid Heightened Political Tension

Tanzania has cancelled this year’s Independence Day celebrations

By Arinaitwe Frank

Tanzania has cancelled this year’s Independence Day celebrations, replacing traditional festivities with a tense and heavily secured atmosphere across the country.

Authorities announced that funds initially set aside for national parades and public events would be redirected toward repairing public infrastructure damaged during recent political unrest. Government buildings, roads, police stations and other facilities were reportedly affected following disturbances linked to the general elections.

The decision comes at a time of growing political tension. Opposition groups and civil activists had called for nationwide demonstrations on Independence Day, demanding accountability over alleged electoral irregularities and reports of excessive force during protests. In response, security agencies warned that any demonstrations would be considered illegal and urged citizens to remain indoors.

On the ground, major cities experienced an unusually quiet Independence Day. Security forces were widely deployed in urban centers, with patrols and checkpoints established near strategic locations. Public movement was limited, and many businesses remained closed as residents stayed home out of caution.

The cancellation has sparked legal and public debate. A court case has been filed challenging the government’s decision to cancel the celebrations, while human rights organisations have raised concerns about arrests and restrictions on civil liberties in the lead-up to the day.

What was traditionally a joyful national occasion was instead marked by silence, uncertainty, and a strong security presence, reflecting the country’s current political climate.
