On Sunday, Libya’s eastern-based House of Representatives reiterated its commitment to backing Sudan, underscoring the need for cooperation in the face of regional challenges, the Libyan News Agency reported.
In Benghazi, eastern Minister of African Affairs Issa Abdulmajid met with a Sudanese delegation led by Consul General Abdulrahman Mohamed Rahmatallah, where he highlighted the historic ties between the two nations and stressed that Sudan’s stability is crucial to Libya’s own security.
Abdulmajid also reviewed agreements already in place in education, health, and agriculture, urging deeper collaboration, particularly in managing the shared border regions.
Expressing appreciation, Rahmatallah praised the longstanding relationship between the two countries and thanked Libya for its humanitarian role in hosting displaced Sudanese citizens.
According to Rahmatallah, the Sudanese community in Libya continues to respect national laws, while Sudan remains committed to the principle of non-interference in other states’ internal matters.
He further revealed that the consulate is preparing a report for Libya on Sudanese nationals residing in the country, especially those seeking voluntary repatriation to safe areas in Sudan.
The meeting additionally tackled practical concerns such as residency procedures for Sudanese students and other challenges faced by the community, which Abdulmajid promised to address through continued coordination with Sudanese authorities.
Since the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that ousted Muammar Gaddafi, Libya has remained divided between the UN-recognized Government of National Unity in Tripoli and an eastern administration supported by Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army.
