In a significant development, the NRM Parliamentary Caucus has unanimously resolved to support the deployment of the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) in South Sudan. This move is aimed at enforcing peace in the conflict-ridden country, rather than just keeping the peace.
Government Chief Whip Hamson Obua clarified that the deployment is a necessary intervention to protect lives, restore stability, and prevent further conflict escalation. Obua emphasized that Parliament has the constitutional mandate to regulate the deployment of the UPDF, both within and outside Uganda.
The decision comes after South Sudan's President Salva Kiir sought urgent support from President Yoweri Museveni to shield his government against rebel forces. The deployment has been justified as a peace enforcement measure, which allows for retrospective approval, rather than a peacekeeping mission that requires prior parliamentary approval.
This development has sparked debate, with some MPs questioning the lack of prior parliamentary approval. However, the NRM caucus has rallied behind the decision, citing the need for swift action to protect regional stability.
