Portugal began their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a disappointing 1-1 draw against DR Congo in their opening group-stage match. Despite entering the tournament as one of the favorites, Roberto Martinez’s side failed to convert their dominance into victory and were forced to settle for a single point.
Portugal Held by DR Congo 1:1 in World Cup Opener
The Portuguese team made a bright start and opened the scoring in the sixth minute. Pedro Neto delivered an accurate cross into the penalty area, where Joao Neves rose highest to head the ball into the far corner, giving Portugal an early advantage.
However, instead of building on their lead, Portugal gradually lost momentum. Their attacking intensity dropped, and they struggled to create clear scoring opportunities. While they maintained possession for long stretches, their play lacked urgency and penetration in the final third.
DR Congo grew in confidence as the first half progressed and looked increasingly dangerous on counterattacks. Their persistence paid off just before halftime when Yoane Wissa found space inside the box and headed home from a well-delivered cross by Arthur Masuaku to level the score at 1-1.
Portugal believed they had regained the lead shortly after the restart when Joao Cancelo produced an impressive acrobatic finish. However, the goal was ruled out for offside following a review. DR Congo then came close to taking the lead themselves, with Cedric Bakambu striking the post after a powerful attacking move.
As the match continued, substitute Francisco Conceicao provided much-needed energy for Portugal. The winger created several promising opportunities and delivered dangerous passes into the penalty area, including chances for Cristiano Ronaldo. Nevertheless, the veteran forward was unable to capitalize on those openings.
Portugal pushed forward in search of a winner during the closing stages, but DR Congo remained disciplined defensively and successfully held on for a memorable draw in their first World Cup appearance since 1974.
