Uganda Receives First US Deportation Flight as Migrants Arrive Under New Relocation Deal

Uganda has received its first group of individuals deported from the United States under a newly established arrangement between the two countries. The group, reported to consist of about a dozen people, arrived as part of a broader approach in which migrants are relocated to countries where they do not necessarily have prior ties.

According to officials in Uganda, the individuals will remain in the country temporarily as authorities explore options for their possible relocation elsewhere. Limited details have been released regarding their identities or nationalities.

The Uganda Law Society confirmed the arrival and indicated plans to challenge the arrangement through legal channels. The organization expressed concern about how such processes are being handled and their broader implications.

This development follows an agreement reached between Uganda and the United States in August, allowing Uganda to host certain individuals who may not be granted asylum in the US and are unable or unwilling to return to their home countries. Ugandan authorities have stated that those accepted under the arrangement would not include individuals with criminal backgrounds or unaccompanied minors.

Uganda joins several other African nations that have taken part in similar relocation arrangements, reflecting a growing trend of international cooperation on migration management.

Officials from the US Embassy in Kampala noted that the transfers are being carried out in coordination with Ugandan authorities, although specific details remain confidential.

Uganda continues to host a large refugee population, mainly from neighboring countries, and the new arrivals add another dimension to the country’s role in regional and international migration matters.
