The Local Council (LC) 1 and 2 elections are set to take place by the end of April 2026, according to Minister of State for Local Government, Hon. Victoria Rusoke. This announcement comes after the term of office for the current LCs 1 and 2, elected in 2018, expired in 2023 and has been extended six times.
The elections will cover over 70,000 villages and will be conducted through the lining-up system. A budget of Shs56.9 billion has been allocated for the elections, but there were concerns about a funding shortfall of Shs58 billion
The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, emphasized the need for clarity on the funding and urged the government to release the allocated funds. The Electoral Commission is expected to announce the specific dates for the elections soon.
