Fifteen Injured in Ntoroko Road Accident
At least 15 people were left injured following a road accident on Wednesday afternoon at Economic Village in Ntoroko District, along the Fort Portal–Bundibugyo highway.
According to Rwenzori West Regional Police spokesperson, Vincent Twesige, the incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. and involved a Toyota Hiace taxi (registration number UBE 166H) that was en route from Kasese to Bundibugyo.
Preliminary reports indicate that the taxi’s brakes failed as it negotiated a sharp corner, causing it to lose control and overturn into a trench. The vehicle also damaged a telecom pole and a nearby semi-permanent house before coming to rest.
Those injured in the crash include Oliver Masika and her two-year-old daughter Ruth Mbireka, Regina Ntungu, Margaret Billy, Phenahance Besigye, Ruth Karibanda, Levina Kabugho, Reuben Namanya, Gloria Musihubura, and Prayer Masiika. Others are Robina Katusabe, Carfort Hasigye, Phiona Masiika, and an elderly man identified only as Amosi. All victims were rushed to Karugutu Health Centre IV for treatment.
Police have since launched a search for the taxi driver, who fled the scene immediately after the accident.
Authorities have once again cautioned public transport operators to carry out regular vehicle maintenance and adhere to speed limits, particularly on the winding mountainous sections of the Fort Portal–Bundibugyo road, which are known accident hotspots.
