Ahead of 2026 polls, Uganda has launched presidential campaigns
Presidential campaigns in Uganda were officially launched on Monday, featuring eight contenders, among them the sitting President Yoweri Museveni, all competing for the nation’s top seat in the 2026 elections.
Over the next three months, campaigns will be held across all 146 districts, leading up to the presidential vote scheduled for January 2, 2026.
Currently in power for 39 years, Museveni is pursuing his seventh consecutive five-year mandate.
Among his strongest opponents are Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly called Bobi Wine, a musician-turned-politician representing the National Unity Platform, and Nathan Nandala Mafabi of the Forum for Democratic Change.
According to Electoral Commission spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi, the commission is fully prepared to ensure free and fair elections, with campaign activities permitted daily between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. local time.
Mucunguzi emphasized, “A harmonized campaign program has been agreed upon for all eight presidential candidates. We urge them to follow both the campaign timetable and the set guidelines.”
