Over 100 individuals who had contact with a patient who died from the deadly Sudan Ebola virus are currently in isolation in Mbale City.
The Ministry of Health declared an Ebola outbreak last week after a 32-year-old male nurse, who worked at Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala, died from the Sudan strain of Ebola. The nurse was buried in Namunsi, Mbale City, last week.
Atek Kagirita, the Ebola Incident Commander, reported that the number of contacts in Mbale continues to rise as efforts to locate additional contacts are ongoing. He explained that those in isolation will be closely monitored for the next 21 days.
Kagirita urged the public to report any contacts who have not yet been isolated to help prevent the further spread of the virus. He also warned that if the public does not cooperate with health authorities, more restrictive measures, such as a lockdown in Mbale City, could be considered.
Asumin Nasike, the Mbale Resident City Commissioner, urged citizens to be cautious of fake news and attempts to politicize the outbreak. She emphasized that the government is not exploiting the Ebola situation for political gain, despite claims from certain parties.
