A fatal road accident in Mbalala, Mukono District, has left the community in shock after a sequence of collisions led to multiple casualties early this morning.
The incident, which occurred around 7am near the Global Paper factory, involved a Toyota Hiace, an Isuzu Forward tipper truck, and a Tata Signa truck, culminating in the tragic deaths of two pedestrians.
The accident began when a Toyota Hiace, registration UBL 778F, traveling from Jinja to Kampala, slowed down to avoid a pothole.
Following closely behind, an Isuzu Forward truck, registration UBF 737T, failed to brake in time, crashing into the Hiace and pushing it off the road. The Isuzu then veered into the opposite lane, further complicating the scene.
As bystanders gathered around the initial collision, a speeding Tata Signa truck, registration UBN 373E, lost control while approaching from a nearby slope.
The truck struck the crowd, tragically killing two brothers, Muguful Willy, 28, and Cherimba Derrick, 24, who had been attempting to cross the road.
Emergency responders swiftly transported the injured to a nearby medical facility, though their identities remain undisclosed. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, highlighting ongoing concerns over the hazardous road conditions in Mbalala, which is plagued by large potholes.
SSP Patrick Onyango, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, confirmed that investigations are underway to determine the causes of both collisions.
Preliminary reports suggest that poor road conditions and speeding may have played a role in the tragedy.
The police have urged drivers to exercise caution around high-risk areas like Mbalala, where heavy traffic from long-haul vehicles poses a constant danger.
Authorities are also appealing for witnesses to come forward with any additional information.
Residents have renewed calls for urgent road repairs and increased traffic enforcement, underscoring a growing frustration with Mukono District's rising accident rates.
Social media posts from local residents convey deep sorrow over the loss of the two young men and emphasize the need for immediate action to prevent similar tragedies.
“Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those affected,” SSP Onyango stated, extending condolences on behalf of the police force.
As Mukono grapples with this heartbreaking event, authorities have vowed to prioritize road safety through infrastructure improvements and enhanced enforcement efforts.
