Uganda Government Begins Shs18 Million Resettlement Payments for Bugisu Landslide Victims

The Government of Uganda has announced plans to provide Shs18 million to eligible households affected by landslide risks in the Bugisu sub-region as part of efforts to support the relocation of families living in dangerous areas. The initiative is intended to help vulnerable communities move to safer locations and reduce the risk of loss of life and property during landslides.

The Bugisu sub-region, located on the slopes of Mount Elgon in eastern Uganda, has experienced recurring landslides and related disasters, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall. The incidents have destroyed homes, damaged farmland, displaced families and, in some cases, resulted in fatalities. Communities living on unstable slopes remain particularly vulnerable because of the region's terrain, soil conditions and changing weather patterns.

Under the announced resettlement arrangement, eligible households are expected to receive Shs18 million to assist them in relocating from high-risk areas. The financial support is intended to help affected families establish themselves in safer places and begin rebuilding their lives away from locations exposed to landslides. However, the precise eligibility requirements, payment schedule and implementation arrangements should be confirmed through official government communications.

Resettlement is an important part of disaster risk reduction because it can help prevent repeated displacement and protect families from living under the constant threat of natural disasters. Nevertheless, successful relocation requires more than financial assistance. Families also need access to suitable land, safe housing, clean water, healthcare, education, roads and other essential services to ensure that their new settlements offer sustainable living conditions.

The programme also highlights the importance of cooperation between government authorities, local leaders and affected communities. Transparent identification of eligible households and timely payment of the promised assistance will be essential in ensuring that support reaches the intended beneficiaries. Authorities must also consider the livelihoods of families whose incomes depend on farming and other activities connected to their original homes.

As Uganda continues to address landslide risks in the Mount Elgon region, long-term measures such as environmental conservation, early-warning systems, public awareness and proper land-use planning remain essential. Communities in high-risk locations need reliable information about impending dangers and practical support to reduce their exposure to future disasters.

The planned Shs18 million payments represent a proposed intervention to support vulnerable households in the Bugisu sub-region. Their impact will depend on effective implementation and whether the assistance enables affected families to relocate safely and rebuild their lives.

Elite Daily News Live (EDNL) will continue updating readers as more information becomes available about the resettlement programme, the beneficiaries and the government's efforts to protect communities at risk of landslides in eastern Uganda.
