King Oyo's body arrived at Humura Primary School playground in Kyegegwa at about 2:30 p.m. on Friday, September 4, 2026, aboard a Uganda People's Defence Forces helicopter from Entebbe. His mother, Queen Mother Best Kemigisa Akiiki, accompanied the remains, alongside members of the Royal Family and Tooro Kingdom officials.
Emotional Reception in Kyegegwa
Hundreds of residents gathered at Humura Primary School to welcome their late King. The atmosphere was emotional, with mourners reportedly breaking down in tears as the casket was removed from the helicopter.
Clerics prayed over the King's body before it was transferred to a specially prepared hearse for the road journey to Fort Portal.
The gathering in Kyegegwa provided local residents with an opportunity to honour King Oyo before the royal procession continued toward the heart of the Tooro Kingdom.
The Final Road Journey to Fort Portal
After the reception in Kyegegwa, the royal cortege began its road journey toward Fort Portal, the historic centre of the Tooro Kingdom.
The procession is expected to pass through several communities, including Kakabara, Migongwe, Kihura, Kyenjojo, Rugombe and Kitumba, before reaching Fort Portal.
Although no formal stopovers have been planned, the procession is expected to move slowly through major population centres to allow mourners along the route to see the casket and pay their respects.
Security personnel have been deployed along the route to manage traffic and crowds as thousands of people gather to witness the King's final journey.
Mourners Gather Along the Route
The return of King Oyo's remains has brought people together across western Uganda.
Residents, cultural leaders, religious figures and members of the public are expected to line the roads as the cortege makes its way toward Karuziika Palace.
For many mourners, the procession represents a final opportunity to honour the King, who had been on the Tooro throne since 1995.
The emotional scenes in Kyegegwa are expected to be repeated in other communities along the route as the King's remains continue toward Fort Portal.
Arrival at Karuziika Palace
The next major destination is Karuziika Palace, where the King's body is expected to be received by the Tooro Royal Family and cultural authorities.
Once at the palace, the remains will lie in state, allowing members of the public to pay their final respects.

Nine Days of Mourning
The arrival of King Oyo's remains at Karuziika Palace marks the beginning of the official nine-day mourning period.
The period will run from September 4 until September 12, when the King is scheduled to be buried.

King Oyo is scheduled to be buried on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at the Karambi Royal Tombs in Fort Portal.
The date carries deep historical significance because it marks the anniversary of his coronation in 1995, when he became King of Tooro at just three years old.
The funeral service is scheduled to take place at St John's Cathedral, followed by the procession to the Karambi Royal Tombs for the final burial rites.
