10 reasons to why people celebrate a new year

Ugandans celebrate the New Year with great enthusiasm and excitement. As the clock strikes midnight on January 1, the celebrations begin with fireworks, music, shouting, singing, dancing, and drumming. Many people choose to stay up to celebrate, knowing that New Year's Day is a public holiday, and schools and most businesses are closed for the day

The celebrations are not just about entertainment; religion also plays a significant role. Churches across Uganda host overnight prayers, known as "crossovers," where congregants thank God for the past year and pray for blessings in the new one.³ Some people also choose to spend the evening in prayer, seeking guidance and strength for the coming year.

In addition to these events, families and neighbors come together for feasts and storytelling around bonfires, especially in rural areas. Younger Ugandans often celebrate with music and dance, attending themed parties with live performances by local artist.

Overall, Ugandans celebrate the New Year as a time of hope and renewal, reflecting on the past year and looking forward to the opportunities and challenges of the coming year.

Happy New year 2025
