The 34-year-old forward made the emotional announcement after Brazil suffered a 2-1 defeat to Norway in the Round of 16, bringing an end to their World Cup campaign. Neymar said his journey with the Brazilian national team had come to a close, describing the moment as the end of a remarkable chapter in his football career.
Despite battling injuries throughout the tournament, Neymar managed to score Brazil’s only goal against Norway from the penalty spot after coming on as a second-half substitute. However, the late goal was not enough to prevent Brazil’s elimination, and the veteran striker was visibly emotional after the final whistle.
Neymar’s final World Cup was heavily affected by a recurring calf injury that limited his playing time. He featured in only two matches during the tournament, making brief appearances against Scotland in the group stage and Norway in the knockout round.
The Brazilian icon made his senior international debut in August 2010 and went on to become the country's all-time leading goalscorer. Over more than a decade, he established himself as one of Brazil’s greatest players, playing a key role in numerous international competitions and inspiring a generation of football fans.
In recent years, injuries reduced Neymar’s influence on the pitch, and Brazil has gradually begun transitioning to a younger squad. Following the defeat, team captain Marquinhos urged supporters to remain patient and continue backing the next generation of Brazilian players as they prepare for future tournaments.
Neymar’s retirement marks the end of one of the most successful international careers in Brazilian football history. His achievements, goals, and unforgettable performances have cemented his legacy as one of the country's finest footballers, even as a new era begins for the five-time world champions.
