A 40-year-old police officer, CPL Agaba Samuel, attached to Bwongyera Sub-county Police Station in Ntungamo District, has been apprehended for being in possession of a stolen mobile phone. According to SP Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi Region Police Spokesman, CPL Agaba allegedly stole a TECNO-POP 5 mobile phone from a businesswoman, KEMBABAZI JUSTINE, on Sunday, March 16, 2025.
The residents of the area chased and assaulted CPL Agaba upon suspicion, but he was rescued by the area Officer in Charge. A search on his person revealed the stolen phone, which was recovered and taken to Bwongyera Police Station for further investigations.
CPL Agaba has been arrested and detained pending investigations. He faces both criminal charges of theft and disciplinary charges of scandalous manner, awaiting prosecution. A video circulating on social media shows the officer being confronted by angry community members, with some resorting to physical violence, before being intervened and taken away by another officer or local leader.
This incident has sparked outrage and raised concerns about police integrity in the region. The police are urging the public to remain calm and allow the law to take its course.
