Yoweri Museveni is the ninth and current President of Uganda, serving since 1986. Born on September 15, 1944, in Ntungamo, Uganda, Museveni studied economics and political science at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania ¹.
Museveni's early career was marked by his involvement in radical pan-African and Marxist political thought. He formed the University Students' African Revolutionary Front and later led a student delegation to FRELIMO-held territory in Portuguese Mozambique, where they received military training ¹.
Museveni played a significant role in the Ugandan Bush War, fighting against the regimes of Idi Amin and Milton Obote. He unified the opposition under the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and started the Ugandan Bush War. In January 1986, after the decisive Battle of Kampala, Museveni was sworn in as president ¹.
As president, Museveni has implemented various policies, including economic liberalization, democratization, and infrastructure development.
Museveni has been re-elected several times, including in 2016 and 2021. His presidency has been marked by significant economic growth, improved infrastructure, and increased access to education and healthcare.
